D E V E L O P E D the concept, then initiated and implemented a joint industry project (JIP) to develop a knowledge-based system ('PTIDES') for technology identification and evaluation, particularly applied to the petroleum and offshore sectors. This JIP, leading ultimately to a decision-support software tool, is sponsored by 6 oil companies, the DTI and a contractor, and is already changing the way in which technologies are developed and supported across the industry, both long- and short-term.

I N I T I AT E D the CoSWaSS (configurable subsea water separation system) technology development programme for a JIP consortium of UK and Norwegian oil companies. OTM designed, prepared and administered the innovative pre-qualification and tendering process to select a contractor to carry out technology development and subsequent prototype engineering, manufacture and testing of CoSWaSS.

M A N A G I N G The Seasense research and development programme (work ongoing) focusing on marine sensor technology development through funding of a cluster of projects. As programme manager, OTM is directly responsible for promotion of the 5-year £3.2 million LINK programme and the stimulation of high quality project proposals, programme administration, proposal evaluation and processing, monitoring of all Seasense projects, and exploitation assistance.

BP Exploration A S S I S T I N G major oil company with technology transfer from its research centre to its operating asset centres (work ongoing). Work included production of technology newsletter, where a significant increase in newsletter circulation has led to increased awareness and usage of cost-effective technologies within company and feedback from technology suppliers. Work also includes involvement in technology transfer workshops and development of new technology transfer initiatives.
Internal Development C O N C E I V E D and developed a tool for technology asset-management (technology auditing and portfolio analysis system - 'TAPAS'). This software tool which is available stand-alone or as part of OTM's consultancy service, enables companies specialising in the development and supply of offshore technology to identify and characterise their technology assets for themselves, and then to carry out portfolio analysis and subsequent marketing planning in a straightforward, graphical manner.

P L A N N E D and organised a seminar on emerging market opportunities for marine sensors. This seminar, which was fully booked before the event, was held at Southampton Oceanography Centre, and included presentations, discussions, and a technical poster session. It attracted a wide range of delegates across the UK marine environmental and oceanographic market, including industrial companies, academics, and representatives from Government departments.
