The system consists of a stainless steel case incorporating four corrosion cells, a flow meter and integral system control valves.
A high pressure low flow air driven chemical pump is used to inject inhibitor into the system to permit treated and untreated fluids to be monitored.
Side Stream Specifications
Case
28x14x14 inches with an open bottom and a removable top manufactured in 316 stainless steel.
Cells
Machined from solid stainless steel bar stock to accept 1" NPT three electrode LPR probes. Four cells are provided, two upstream cells to test uninhibited brines and two downstream cells to test inhibited brine. The inhibitor is injected before the downstream pair of cells using a chemical pump into a mixing TEE. The flowrate is monitored using a 0 to 20 litre per minute GAP type flow meter at the outlet from the unit.
Once flow is established using the meter it can be diverted to a high Pressure drain to prevent scaling of the meter during long term tests.
The inlet flow is controlled using a needle valve and the outlet pressure is adjusted by a further needle valve in conjunction with a 0-1000 psi pressure guage.
Chemical Injection
Inhibitors are injected into the cells using an air driven WILLIAMS type chemical injection pump.
Corrosion Monitor
A portable ACM Instruments LPR type monitor is supplied to monitor corrosion rates. The monitor can be either battery or mains powered. It features a choice of electrode selectors and recorder outputs.
Low Pressure Field Corrosion Sidestream
Other Sidestream units are available for low pressure operation. The principle is the same as for the high pressure system described above with the exception that the corrosion cells are made from a polycarbonate material.
Applications
For the evaluation of Corrosion Inhibitors in the field or process plant.
For the Measurement of Corrosion Rates where no intrusive equipment is installed.
System Components
The following is a description of each of the critical components of the system.
HP/HT Corrosion Cell
The complete cell is machined from Incalloy block. The endcap is machined to take the LPR Probe, a thermowell, connections for pressurising and for venting the cell.
Internally the endcap has a collar at the lower inside edge which is drilled to accommodate the hangers for coupons or pipe pieces.
The cell capacity is nominally 650ml.
The cell meets the requirements of Standard ASTM A262 and procedure G31 for volume of fluid to coupon surface areas when used with 3 x 12 cm2 coupons.
Heater Unit
The heater unit consists of an insulated jacket with 4 x 200 watt heater elements spaced equally around the circumference of the jacket.
Stirrer Unit
The stirrer unit is a variable 0 to 1200 rpm stirrer unit with a digital display of RPM.
Temperature Control Unit
The temperature is monitored via a thermocouple in the thermowell in the endcap of the cell connected to a digital temp controller which controls the heating jacket. The controller is capable of + 0.5 oC at 300oC.
Buffer Unit
The purpose of the buffer unit is to provide a means of pressurising the cell with test fluid and a safety buffer when the cell is heated. This unit allows pressure to be relieved from the cell without test fluid being released into the laboratory atmosphere.
LPR Probe
A 2 electrode High Pressure LPR probe in a 1'' BSP fitting constructed from Incalloy tube.
LPR Meter
A portable LPR type monitor is supplied to monitor corrosion rates. The monitor can be either battery or mains powered.
Chart Recorder
The standard unit consists of a single channel BBC flat bed recorder providing variable span, speed and the option of digital function writing on the start of runs.
Enclosure
A polycarbonate enclosure constructed on a angle frame is provided.
Operating and Maintenance Manuals
Full operating instructions and maintenance manuals are provided.
