Table 2 Basin analysis: sub-surface imaging technology

RTD TOPICS/ OBJECTIVES Category
1. Develop new, high resolution non-interventionist/remote sensing techniques to: E + TE - identify fluid phases ahead of drilling; - resolve more precisely geological (stratigraphic and structural) and fluid boundaries; - assess the benefits/feasibility of utilising seismic shear wave technology routinely in exploration; - enhance three component seismic processing for handling shear wave signals; - extract more petrophysical information (attributes) from the 3D seismic data cube, including improved methods to extract useful signals from noisy data. (Asset focus: exploration, prospect appraisal, field development and improved recovery from existing fields) 2. In reflection seismic surveying, to enhance data compression, data communication, TE + E signal-to-noise ratio, multiple suppression, time-to-depth conversion, 3D depth migration, multiple attenuation, seismic-to-well ties, sub-salt imaging. (Asset focus: all assets studied using seismic methods) 3. In reflection seismic surveying, to enhance concurrent acquisition and TE + CR processing capability to allow more "interpretative" processing in addition to pre-set routines. (Options will arise from improved computer power for on-board processing and from improved data transmission from ship to shore, including routine use of satellite communications.) (Asset focus: all assets studied using seismic methods) TE- technology enhancement. CR- cost reduction. E- enabling.
