The information presented in Table 22 is a summary of the upstream oil and gas topics being promoted under the EU's JOULE-THERMIE Programme (European Commission, 1994), addressing research (JOULE ) and technology demonstration (THERMIE).

In its description of the JOULE-THERMIE Programme, the European Commission indicates that all the RTD actions are directed towards eventual commercial goals (i.e. "blue sky" research is ineligible). JOULE project outcomes are expected to require additional assistance before they can be considered ready to compete in the market place. THERMIE projects are those in which technical uncertainties in the process or product have been resolved but uncertainties remain in terms of scale-up, operating conditions and/or economic viability. These need to be overcome before market take-up is likely to be achieved.
