Background
The European Commission's Directorate-General for Energy
is holding its 5th Oil and Gas Symposium in the UK in November 1996. This
event, which will take place at the new purpose-built Edinburgh International
Conference Centre, will be both a technical and high level policy-making
conference.
Objectives
This symposium will present the latest technologies for
the exploration, production and transport of oil and gas which have been
developed in the Member States of the European Union. The technologies
presented will cover the wide range of R&D and demonstration projects
which have received support under the EC's JOULE-THERMIE Programme.
The symposium will also be used as a forum to:
Particular emphasis will be placed on the role of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), which provide much of the innovative technology in the oil and gas industry. The symposium aims to provide a forum for SMEs to make business contacts with other SMEs from across Europe and larger companies working in similar technical areas.
Symposium Programme
The opening plenary session will address policy and strategy
issues, with keynote speeches from the EC Commissioner, local and national
government representatives, and captains of industry. This will be followed
by up to six parallel technical sessions focusing on the following themes:

A poster session and technology exhibition will be arranged
for projects which complement the presentations in the technical sessions.
A round table session entitled "European Oil and
Gas Technology: A Strategy for Survival" will provide delegates
with the opportunity to question the panellists on their vision of the
future of Europe's oil and gas industry. The panellists will include senior
representatives from both large and small companies operating in the hydrocarbons
industry, as well as politicians with specific responsibilities for oil
and gas. Lively and provocative comment is expected during this session.
Workshop: Applying for THERMIE support
A workshop on the aims of THERMIE and how to apply for funding will be held on Monday 25 November. This will be of particular relevance to companies considering applying for assistance under THERMIE. The workshop will highlight the most common reasons for proposals being rejected and describe how this can be avoided.
Target Audience
The Symposium will provide a forum for discussion between
key policy makers in the industry and government, technology developers,
oil operating companies, financial institutions, politicians and the media.
Approximately 500 delegates are expected to attend the event.
SMEs in particular will benefit from the opportunity to
meet like-minded companies from across Europe, with the view to building
working relationships and identifying potential partners for future JOULE-THERMIE
funded projects.
Registration Fee
Delegate registration for the symposium is 300.00 (Pounds
Sterling) and includes:
