Changing markets and new directions:
The focus for PSTI's 1995 Forum
PSTI's forthcoming International Petroleum Science and Technology Forum will highlight the Institute's strategic role on behalf of its Members operating in and shaping the "marketplace" for the development and acquisition of new knowledge and technology. Identification of requirements to meet corporate goals and asset challenges, access to and linkage with the science-base, pathways from research and technology development (RTD) to innovation, and the diffusion of global information on science and technology which brings competitive intelligence will be addressed from both a UK and international perspective.
A number of recent trends in private and public sector strategies impact upon RTD and innovation in the upstream oil and gas sector.
In industry we see :
- a tighter focus on linkage between RTD investments and core business needs;
- a re-assessment of the source of competitive advantage stimulating strong
- changing relations between E&P companies and their contractors, including contractors with high innovative capability.
In government we see :
- a more explicit linkage in policy between research investment from public funds and wealth creation;
- recognition of the importance of technological innovation to the competitiveness of firms; and
- recognition of the importance of small and medium sized enterprises to wealth creation.
The significance for PSTI's Members of these trends and the optimisation of the strategies now being implemented by industry and by government is the focus of the Forum. Speakers from the UK government's Department of Trade and Industry, from the Office of Science and Technology, the Natural Environment Research Council and the Marine Technology Directorate Limited will contribute. The importance of the European Union in energy and innovation policy and in RTD and demonstration programme support will be recognised by the participation of speakers from the European Commission. RTD providers will also contribute their perspective.
The Forum proceedings will be set against a background provided by keynote presentations by speakers from PSTI's Member companies on their business and technology drivers.
As an integral part of the Forum, PSTI is mounting a "new directions" exhibition to provide a showcase for emerging science and engineering with potential to impact the upstream industry in the year 2000. This will provide an early opportunity for RTD providers to gain feedback from industry on "fit" with asset challenges.
The Forum will be held on 14-15th November, 1995 in Edinburgh. For more information on the programme content contact Dr Stewart Brown, for registration information contact Amy Middlemass, both at PSTI, Edinburgh (Telephone : 0131 451 5231) .
