Stenmar was formed in 1992 to develop, manufacture and distribute a range of innovative subsea acoustic and video products.

Based on the Aberdeen Offshore Technology Park since 1992, Stenmar has also developed its advanced project engineering capability, specialising in turnkey projects in underwater systems and subsystems. These projects have been diverse in scope, including the design and manufacture of subsea battery packs, diving spreads, acoustic distance measuring systems, pipeline inspection cameras and subsea control systems.

The company also resolved to enhance its underwater capabilities through acquisition, and duly entered the diver training and subsea trials market with the purchase of the Underwater Centre on Loch Linnhe in 1994. The Centre was originally founded at Loch Linnhe in 1972 because of the loch's deep, sheltered waters which realistically emulate offshore conditions. It is now the longest-established underwater trials facility in the world. Many of the world's leading military hardware manufacturers and offshore operators have since sent their subsea scientific equipment, ROVs, mini-submarines and other underwater hardware for intensive testing at unrestricted depths of over 150 metres.

Stenmar's growth and success is reflected in the Stenmar Group client portfolio. The company has successfully executed contracts for clients such as the Defence Research Agency, the Canadian Department of Oceans and Fisheries, the American Navy, and major oil companies, as well as environmental interests from the Faroes to New Zealand.

In terms of technology , Stenmar continues to push back the boundaries in underwater acoustics, video, control systems and telemetry.

Stenmar is currently leading a joint-industry project to develop a comprehensive inspection and integrity monitoring system for flexible flow lines and risers. Operating within a total quality management environment, Stenmar is committed to achieving the Investors in People standard.

Two years on, Stenmar products are now marketed and manufactured through a subsidiary company, Marine Micro Systems Ltd., whose product range includes net monitoring products for the fishing industry, video systems for subsea surveys and the world leading RoxAnn seabed classification system. RoxAnn is an innovative and unique hydro-acoustic processor which, when connected to a standard echo-sounder, will discriminate between sea-bed material types and output the data acquired in a quantitive format ready for computer analysis.
