PSTI is funded by Members' subscriptions and from contract income. The Institute's Members include exploration and production companies, technology delivery companies, contract research organisations and government. There is also a membership scheme designed for innovative small and medium sized enterprises in the petroleum service sector.
On behalf of its Members the Institute works to ensure maximum return on research investment. Based on a knowledge of its Members' research requirements PSTI ensures that membership subscription income is invested in applied research and that the results are delivered to all Members.
PSTI is responsible to its Members for enhancing research co-ordination. Through this activity the Institute has built networks across both the research community and the upstream oil and gas industry to improve the match between industry requirement and research activity.
As part of its service to Members PSTI operates a technical information and advisory service which underpins its activities in research. PSTI provides its Members with information on research which is being conducted and the key organisations undertaking this work. This information is accumulated by the Institute and published in The International Petroleum Research Directory which provides details of current/ongoing research activity related to the upstream hydrocarbon industry.
This directory will eventually be incorporated in PTERIS (The Petroleum Technology and Research Information System), an important new information service which allows Members to gain access to specific hydrocarbons information on the INTERNET.
Information and advice is also available on emerging technologies available for exploitation by the industry. PSTI organises a number of seminars and workshops each year to facilitate technology transfer into the industry.
Interaction with Members takes place at various levels in the PSTI Board of Management, in the Science Advisory Committee and through contacts with a nominated management representative of each Member company. The key element of the communications service is the Members' Brief folder which contains a series of official communications issued by the Institute and acts as a concise guide to PSTI activities. Regular updates keep Members informed of Institute activities and developments within the industry.
PSTI also works closely with the European Commission as one of its OPETs (Organisation for the Promotion of Energy Technology). PSTI is the lead OPET in the hydrocarbons sector and is responsible for promoting innovative technologies in the hydrocarbons sector which have been funded by the EC's THERMIE programme and are now approaching market-readiness. This is achieved through a wide range of technical publications, seminars, workshops and market assessment studies. Through its international activities on behalf of the European Commission the Institute has developed substantial capability in the areas of information dissemination, technology promotion and technical management of projects. In addition it has resulted in a depth of knowledge of many of the most innovative SME's in the upstream petroleum sector in Europe.
PSTI also has a membership scheme designed for small and medium sized "technology delivery" companies in the manufacturing, service and supply sector.
