When Elf Enterprise Caledonia - a subsidiary of top industrial group Elf Aquiline, owned 66.67% Elf, 33.3% Enterprise Oil - acquired the North Sea interests of Occidental in 1991, it became the fourth largest operating company in the United Kingdom.

Today more than 20 per cent of Elf's oil and gas interests are located in the UK, which is the largest area of activity for the Group outside France.

Headquartered at the Bridge of Don, Aberdeen, Elf Enterprise Caledonia operates three offshore platforms - Piper B, Saltire and Claymore - the Flotta Oil Terminal in Orkney together with its 200 mile pipeline system, and a materials and supply base in Peterhead.

The Ecosse Centre, occupying a total of 6.2 acres of the Offshore Technology Park, is the scene for our operational research and development activities. The building won an Aberdeen Civic Society Award in 1991.

The modern offices accommodate around 200 members of staff, mainly from Exploration, Reservoir Engineering, Drilling and Completions and Interpretation Support, together with an extensive laboratory for the Wireline Group.

As the established North Sea basins mature, today's challenge is to increase recovery from producing fields and develop smaller, more costly fields.

Our technical teams at the centre are involved in the complex task of interpreting the vast amount of data acquired during North Sea seismic surveys, including mapping, well log analysis and modelling, and the Ecosse Centre provides the ideal high-tech work environment for the development of new techniques.

The partners of the Fourth Round Consortium are Elf Enterprise Caledonia Limited (operator), Texaco Britain Limited, LASMO (TNS) Limited and Union Texas Petroleum Limited. The Consortium holds interests in five fields - Piper, Saltire, Chanter, Claymore and Scapa - and their installations; a 200 mile pipeline system and the Flotta Terminal. The start of production of the Piper, Saltire and Chanter fields in 1993 increased Flotta Terminal's throughput by some 50 per cent, from around 200,000 barrels per day to over 300,000 barrels per day, 15 per cent of the UK's oil output.

A recent addition for Elf is the new Claymore Accommmodation Platform (CAP) which is to replace the existing accommodation facilities on the Claymore Production Platform (CCP). This project represents a milestone for the North Sea in terms of safety and is expected to be operational from July 1995.
