CALtec was established in Aberdeen in 1990 as the oil and gas technology division of 47 year old BHR Group Limited (formerly BHRA, The Fluid Engineering Centre). Expanding on the service previously offered by BHRA's Oil and Gas Division, CALtec offers a combination of engineering skills and access to key facilities from its Aberdeen headquarters.
CALtec - A Product Development Company Specialists in "Design, Development and Testing" of niche hydrocarbon production related "Products". CALtec will endeavour to develop its specialist consultancy services to meet the industry needs and to develop a customer centered culture. To ensure customer satisfaction and to achieve successful exploitation of proprietary products, CALtec will form Joint Ventures with other specialist companies to bolster its position in the industry and to sustain profit margins. CALtec is to become the Representative Office for the whole of the BHR Group in "Scotland.
WELLSEP is a compact, lightweight inline separator with minimal internal features and control requirements.
Requiring a small fraction of the volume needed for conventional separators, WELLSEP is expected to be low cost and offer improved safety and reliability. The wide range of field applications includes primary gas/liquid separation, liquid knockout from wet gas phase, bulk-oil/water separation and sand removal. The project will be of interest to oil and gas companies wishing to achieve significant reduction in the cost of their field developments.

FLOWMASTER
CALtec's new 10 inch pipeline test facility was officially opened by Energy Minister, Mr Tim Eggar, MP in December 1994. The flow loop was relocated from Cranfield to Aberdeen Offshore Technology Park with assistance from Scottish Enterprise and Grampian Enterprise. The project provides design information to enable the manufacture of higher efficiency pigs and the design of more economically viable pipeline systems. The facility is also available for companies who wish to carry out their own testing. To find out more about the flow loop, click on this box.
CALtec draws on BHRA's 42 years of high quality service to industry and experience in developing and applying new technlogies and techniques based on its expertise in fluid engineering.
With ten years continuous service to the oil and gas industry, CALtec has a strong technology base for clients to access. Contract research for clients can be on a single-sponsor basis addressing specific short term problems, or as part of a large industrial consortium programme tackling strategic issues. A commitment to effective and co-ordinated project management ensures efficiency from conception to completion.
CALtec's service to the oil and gas industry is built around the increasing range and scope of its research programmes. In offering clients a comprehensive multi-disciplinary problem-solving capability, CALtec often undertakes projects in partnership with other centres of expetise throughout the world.
An extensive range of activities address customers' contract research requirements.
CALtec is a world leader in the development of design and operating critria for multiphase flowline and riser system.
The application of innovative techniques has secured the develoment of novel multiphase flow pressure boosting systems.
Smaller, lighter and more efficient equipment for subsea and floating production systems are now in operation as a result of CALtec's research programmes.
High pressure water jets enhance the performance of downhole tools.
New water based systems are satisfying more stringent safety guidelines for the offshore industry.
Problems of vibration and fatigue associated with offshore structures due to complex interaction between fluid and the structure and alleviated through analysis and evaluation.
Investigation of the relationship between fluid propeties and behaviour is improving production efficiency threatened by foam, emulsion, scale, wax and hydrate formation.
Applying technological expertise and experience acquired through research, CALtec can optimise the design of new products or enhance the performance of existing ones for client companies.
In conjunction with design knowledge, CALtec offers a mathematical and physical modelling capability; together with prototype testing facilities to improve the performance, reliability and safety of clients' products.
Over a number of years CALtec has established a portfolio of successful product development projects in a variety of technology areas.
An award winning technique was developed for the in-situ relining of corroded pipelines using medium density polythene material. The benefits include improved flow characteristics and greater lifetime expectancy, without the need to excavate which reduces construction costs.
The in-situ descaling of production tubulars will be improved through the development of a tool originating from an innovative application of abrasive jetting technology.
A reduction in the flow-induced vcibration of risers and drillstrings was the successful outcome of a system employing a novel application of buoyancy modules. Eliminating damage to risers both improves production efficiency and reduces the chance of oil spillage.
The use of compact process plant offshore provides savings of weight and space . CALtec has intensified de-gassing equipment through a design which has already been used for de-aerating sea water employed for well injection.
In addition to providing a product development service for clients, CALtec offers support in identifying market gaps for new hardware. Employing a combination of in-house resources, joint venture projects and acquisition, the company is active in exploiting advances in technology for the benefit of the offshore industry
Drawing on its research and development skills in all aspects of offshore engineering, CALtec offers a comprehensive consultancy service.
CALtec employs a wealth of expretise and experience gained at the forefront of technology development to solve fluid flow and fluids handling problems for its clients.
CALtec undertakes a range of assignments which includes troubleshooting, technical auditing and conceptual design. Where necessary the company will seek alliances to combine the engineering skills of others with CALtec's depth of technology. As part of an independent research and technology group operating worldwide, CALtec has the experience and flexibility to put together international multi-disciplinary teams of experts to provide a total systems capability.
Fluid flow analysis is offered for single and multi-phase pipelines and pipeline networks, inlcuding stepouts, gathering systems and transfer lines. CALtec has experience of all aspects of hydraulic design of pipelines and the influence of fluid flow on pipeline operation.
A combination of CALtec's fluid flow and process engineering expertise optimises the performance of vessels, pumps, compressors and other items of process equipment for fixed platforms, floating production systems and subsea installations. Fluid flow analysis improves operational efficiency.
Flow-induced vibration in pipeline and piping systems can be suppressed through detailed analysis of internal and external flows. CALtec can provide an offshore monitoring service, along with design modifications or recommendations.
Reliability and security of fire safety systems is improved through hydraulic analysis, audit and design. Mathematical modelling of deluge systems, in parallel with site observations, enables full steady state and transient analyses of water delivery at all points in the system.
